Thunder
June 3rd, 2007 by kitWe’re having a classic Texas thunderstorm here right now. Starts out still and it slowly gets dark out. A flash and crack and then the rain begins with waves of thunder washing over our house.
Mo is bothered by any unexpected noise, and the loud rolling booms of thunder are almost more than she can bear. She squeals and runs in circles with her hands over her ears, yelling “No like dunder!” over and over and over the noise of the storm.
I explain to her that it’s just the air moving out of the way of the lightning with no luck. I try to have her count the seconds between the flash and the noise in hopes that she can gain some control over the anticipation, but it doesn’t work. The sudden light and noise over the dull roar of the wind and rain is too much for her little system to process.
I try to comfort her, but she’s too upset. Christopher tries to console me a little, telling me, “It’s okay, Dad. Moira just has brontophobia.”
