Scotland & Ireland Fall 2016

2015 in Review

January: Moira sold Girl Scout cookies with her new troop; Kit took the older kids to watch the Harlem Globetrotters and Ben got to do the toss up!

February: Kit spent a week in Louisiana at Mardi Gras with Christopher, Moira and Ben while I stayed home with the younger three and visited with lots of friends (including Meg and her goats.) When they came home it snowed! The kids began swimming again at TWU, and Ben turned 10.

March: West Texas – we braved an ice storm and horrendous roads to head west: Midland, Monohan Sand Dunes, Carlsbad Caverns, scuba diving in a lake, McDonald observatory, Fort Davis. J started attending judo with Kit and Christopher, and some of the kids returned to Spirit Horse.

April: Doctor Who day on the Square where we got our comics was fun, and family pictures in the Tardis. Christopher earned his yellow belt in Judo.

May: We flew to England where we were met by Emily and Richy, to the kids’ surprise! (We also set the dangerous precedent that after surprising them with Emily and Richy in both Florida AND England the kids assume they will be joining us for all our vacations.) Mo turned 12.

June: We flew to Washington DC, which needs its own post because it was fantastic.

July: Mo and the Girl Scouts walked in the 4th of July parade. We flew to San Francisco to see the redwoods, Chinatown, the Bay Bridge, and a secret but awesome adventure.

August: J turned 7, E turned 9, Kit turned 41.

September: Mo and I had a sleepover at Sea World with the Girl Scouts and stopped at the Alamo on our way home. Emy joined Girl Scouts, and Mo bridged from Junior to Cadette. We helped harvest the honey from Jean’s beehives. J started a month long hockey workshop in Frisco.

October: We met friends at the Pumpkin Patch and later for a homeschoolers fall carnival, trick-or-treated around the square, and attended the ward trunk-or-treat. Livy turned five. Emy got chickens. I ran away to see Carrie in Canada for a few days and it was a much needed Mommy retreat.

November: C turned 14, and we saw the grandparents and Emily & Richy around Thanksgiving.

December: We toured the Japanese Gardens in Fort Worth to see the changing colors. C and Kit said it’s one of their most favorite places we’ve visited EVER. The weather was weird, from 70s and sunny to snowing and a tornado. I’m back at work, with three babies coming in 10 days just before Christmas.

It’s been another epic year! I’m writing this up to hopefully inspire me to write up some more detailed posts – my resolution for 2016, to get back into the happen of writing. Plus we’re anticipation some pretty wonderful things to come for next year. 🙂

Field Trips, Catch Up, Life

It’s been about a year since I posted… and oh, what a year it has been!

On our most recent trip we tried to list the places we’ve been since NASA last spring.

* Road trip to Minnesota for their great-grandmother’s funeral and visited the home where their grandfather grew up.

* NYC for the Katie Couric show.

* Road trip to Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico to see family.

* Florida for the new Harry Potter World – Diagon Alley – and to see the beach.

* Austin & San Antonio road trip.

* Alaska to see the northern lights.

* Oklahoma.

* C and Ben and I went to Los Angeles for “The Doctors” show.

* The Grand Canyon and CBS Evening News “On the Road.”

* Florida for Disney!

* NYC for Kit, Ben and C for the Rachel Ray show & Food Network.

* Kansas to spend Christmas with the grandparents.

* Mardi Gras in Louisiana for Kit and the oldest three kids.

* West Texas & southeastern New Mexico.

All within the last year. Isn’t that crazy?? It’s been crazy.

We’re writing up the adventures (slowly, I am very behind) on the family blog – here. There are more to come, too! And I’ve not even listed the local adventures.

NASA Rocks!!

NASA-2I’ve got the gallery up, Kit’s setting up the video today of the entire trip (with slideshow, video clips, etc.) On our blog are more details about our day at NASA and pictures stories galore. The kids keep coming up to me and saying, “That was so awesome, Mom. I can’t believe we did that.”

In one day we managed to cram in so much science that wasn’t just theoretical but hands on and I know this has truly been life altering for our kids. Our three year old is walking around saying she’s an astronaut and the seven year old says, “Then you better bounce more because you’ll have less gravity!” Truly – this was a once in a lifetime experience they will never, ever forget. (Me, neither. Lots of happy tears this day.)

Space!

The kids decided to fundraise for their hoped for wish list trips and we ended up on the front page of the paper! It’s been wonderful to see the response and the kids entirely sold out of truffles they sold for Valentine’s Day (even the ugly ones that didn’t pass quality control.)

We’ve also been contacted by people with great suggestions and tips and offers to help make the wish list come true. (Here is the wish list.) The kids hoped to see NASA someday and we were contacted by someone who works there! We’re waiting for approval and clearance and coordinating and such but this may mean we get to go see the space center soon (before I go back on call for my next little doula baby arrival.)

In the meantime the kids are reading all our books about space and watching videos about planets and it’s been a fantastic unit study.

While there we’ll spend a little bit of time on the coast, hopefully ride a ferry, eat some shrimp, and check out the Children’s Museum of Houston if we have time. Oh, and on our way coming or go we plan to hit a chocolate factory, another item on our wish list. 🙂

This is the kids’ favorite book about space thus far, and it’s great for a wide variety of ages from our 3 year old up through our 12 year old. I really like it – Earth and Space

2014!

So much has happened since we last posted – a wild and wonderful trip to Harry Potter world thanks to an anonymous benefactor, visits to the Perot science museum thanks to an incredibly generous donation, a surprise trip to the Apple store for a field trip and iPad for Ben, plus the Dallas Museum of Art, ice skating at Klyde Warren Park, and the Dallas zoo. Busy, and incredible. (Some pictures here.)

We learned Ben has become legally blind (we got the news the first week of November) and it’s been a lot to process – therapy, new services, cane training, eye specialists, and the emotional dealing with the news. It’s been hard on all the kids to work through this news.

I’ve taken a lighter schedule in 2014 from my work so we can focus on some of these changes and to allow us to make some more special trips from Ben’s wish list of things he wants to do and things he wants to see before he loses more eyesight.

But I’m also trying to make sure we fit in at least some basics, like math and writing and reading lessons. And to help make myself more accountable I plan to post more here. We’ll see how this goes…

Garden from KDB

We received a garden kit from Keep Denton Beautiful which is also who sponsors the tree giveaway and hosted our homeschool field trip!

The plants came from Dennis’ Farm Store which is already our favorite spot for getting seedlings for our fruits, veggies & herbs.

Today we planted! We decided on cauliflower, broccoli, spinach, and some sugar snap peas in another container.

Our oldest had a late night and long day and was rather worn out by the time we planted.

Camping Trip

We planned for months to visit the coast for a camping trip on the beach. Alas, the weather forecast indicated days and days of rain and thunder, which did not sound appealing. We changed locations and still had a fantastic time on the lake beach closer to home.

We saw this our first night and were glad we were not under that storm!

For dinner one night we prepped baked potato foil dinners with veggies and let the kids assemble their own, then we just had to toss them on to warm up. We also did their favorite dipping sauces in these handy little containers:

Vegan waffle cone s’mores, much less messy than regular s’mores!

One more Pinterest inspired tip – use an empty laundry detergent container as a hand washing station, and tie a bar of soap in a mesh bag to keep it close. This was a BIG help!
