Solar Oven Snickerdoodles

After reading a variety of sites on how to make a solar cooker with kids I gave up on the instructions and we made our own version.

Black construction paper in the bottom of a box and aluminum foil on all four flaps of the box to reflect inward. I had a piece of plexiglass from an old poster frame and we laid that across the top of the open box/flaps for reflection and bug proofing. I had Mo put cookies on a toaster oven size cookie sheet and we’re taking pictures and checking on them to see how long this takes.

Update: We’ve tried two kinds of cookies now at two times of day for hours and HOURS and no luck. The cookie dough dried out but did not bake. It’s 94 degrees here in Texas, whatever happened to frying an egg on the sidewalk? 🙂 We’ll have to revamp the solar oven style and see how we can improve it to bake something.

  1. I remember on the news last summer they said that if you put chocolate chip cookies on the dashboard of your car and left in the sun they would cook in 2-3 hours. I guess that would defeat the purpose of a home made solar oven though. 🙂
