Library Safety Class

This afternoon our wonderful library had a guest presentation from the local shelter, Friends of the Family. They had books to check out, puppets, and a video about personal safety. While geared to kids in 1st and 2nd grade, it was great for our 3 year old up through our 10 year old (as big kids can always use a review, right?) They talked about the three rules (Use your words, Run away, Tell someone) and different situations (strangers, hurt, touch) and types of touch (good, bad, confusing.) I like that they also covered the difference between surprises (good things we’ll eventually tell) and secrets (something we don’t tell.)

Especially in light of some recent concerns with a couple of our kids this was a well timed class. We’re also reviewing our Kid Power curriculum.

Things to do in Dallas

The Opera!

Today the oldest three kids and Kit went to see “Dr. Miracle” at the Windspear theater with the Dallas opera. It was a daytime show for kids but our friend is in it and got them some comp tickets. Here they are in their box seats:

B’s report: There were lots of people on the stage and they sing. And he liked that he knew one of the singers. (The the father of a girl in B’s class at church.)

C’s report: It was pretty good! I find it a bit hard to explain the play since about half the time I didn’t even understand what they were saying. It made my legs a bit tingly because there were gaps in the steps. (They were scared by the height.) The chandelier started to go into the ceiling when it was time… (Then he started talking too fast and I couldn’t get it all down.)

M’s report: To come…

While they were gone I took the youngest three to visit a longtime friend of mine, she was my best friend in Louisiana my freshman year then also moved to Texas for the following year. Their family is recently back in the area and our girls had a blast playing together while we visited. Fun morning for everyone!

Summer Reading Program

After 10 days of reading (or being read to) for 20 minutes a day we turned in our logs and got our first price – a book! Mom had the final veto power so we got a mix of what I felt I didn’t mind having in the house. 🙂 And everyone gets a book, babies through grown ups.

A dragon book, the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Harry Potter (covers all seven books) and an Encyclopedia Brown:

Magic Schoolbus, Whacky Atlas, Diary of a Worm:

She was swaying back and forth with excitement, it’s fuzzed! A fairy tale compilation and a Pinkalicious easy reader for the big girls to share:

So go sign up for the summer reading program! Most years for the second set of 10 days the kids get a coupon for a local restaurant, like Coldstone or this last year it was Jason’s Deli (and we JUST last week let B use up his coupon for a solo date with Kit.) This year they have by age things like a bip, “mood cup”, pencils, etc. The third set of 10 days gets them a pass to the library waterpark night.

Science Museum

We decided today needed to be a science field trip so we packed a lunch and packed some kids and headed down to Dallas.

Is it terrible that we were so amused by our kids cowering from the dinosaurs? They move. It was pretty creepy:

As were the bugs, but the kids loved those and the snakes and turtles and fish and lizards. They dressed up as bugs and played in a spiderweb:

We also did some rock climbing, exploring a three way mirror, dug for dinosaur bones, and milked a cow that produced water!

Then we had our picnic lunch by the lake where the kids explored a sculpture bridge on the lake, B begged for a ride on the swan paddle boats, and J terrorized the pigeons by throwing bits of his sandwich at them and chasing them down to hold them. It was a great day, and thankfully the anti-carseat Miss O napped on the way going and coming back. (Waking up at the end to remind us that she HATES her carseat and we won’t be taking any trips anytime soon.)
